How laser hair removal works

Laser hair removal uses concentrated light to target the pigment in hair follicles. The light turns into heat inside the follicle and disrupts its growth cycle, while the surrounding skin is protected. Over a series of sessions, this gives long-term hair reduction without constant shaving, painful waxing or stubborn ingrown hairs.

Areas we treat

Treatment works for both women and men, on sensitive and large areas alike.

  • Face: upper lip, chin or full face
  • Underarms
  • Bikini and Brazilian
  • Torso: chest, abdomen, back and buttocks
  • Arms and legs: arms, upper or lower legs, or full legs

Our 810 nm diode laser

We use the Spectrum Laser/IPL System by Rohrer Aesthetics, a medical-grade, multi-platform workstation that combines four lasers with intense pulsed light. For hair removal, we use its 810 nm diode laser, chosen for long-lasting results with comfort and speed.

  • Precise targeting of hair follicles
  • Minimal discomfort during each session
  • Fast treatment times with no downtime
  • Consistent, long-term hair reduction

The same system powers our IPL photofacial for pigment, acne and redness, and our Erbium laser skin resurfacing.

Skin and hair types we treat

The 810 nm diode laser treats all skin types, including deeper skin tones, with settings matched to your skin. Its longer wavelength passes through surface pigment more safely than shorter wavelengths do. Avoid tanning between sessions, since freshly tanned skin raises the risk of irritation.

Hair color matters too. The laser finds hair by its pigment, so dark hair responds best. White, gray, red and light blond hair usually respond poorly.

Unlike a day spa, every treatment here is supervised by Dr. Pabona, a board-certified internist, for medical-level safety and accuracy. Not sure you’re a candidate? Start with a skin consultation.

How many sessions you’ll need

Hair grows in cycles, and the laser works best on follicles in their active growth phase. Only some hairs are in that phase at any time, so sessions are spaced to catch each follicle at the right moment. Most areas need 6 to 8 sessions:

  • Face: 6–8 sessions, every 4–6 weeks
  • Underarms: 6–8 sessions, every 6–8 weeks
  • Bikini and Brazilian: 6–8 sessions, every 6–8 weeks
  • Arms and legs: 6–8 sessions, every 8–12 weeks

What “permanent hair reduction” means

“Permanent hair reduction” is the FDA’s term for a long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs that regrow, measured 6, 9 and 12 months after a full course of treatment. It doesn’t mean every hair is gone forever.

After a full series, most people have far less hair, and what grows back is often finer and lighter. Hormones, age and some medications can trigger new growth over time, so an occasional maintenance session keeps skin smooth. Individual results vary. You can browse results across our treatments in the before-and-after gallery.

Before and after your session

Before

Shave the area the day before. Don’t wax, pluck or thread between sessions, because the laser needs the hair root in place. Avoid tanning and self-tanner, and arrive with clean skin, with no lotion or deodorant on the area.

During

Sessions are quick. Most people feel a brief, warm snap with each pulse, and sensitive areas like the bikini line and upper lip are treated with care.

After

There’s no downtime. Mild redness or small bumps around follicles usually settle within hours, and treated hairs typically shed over the next one to three weeks. Use sunscreen on treated areas, and skip hot tubs, saunas and bathhouse soaks for a day or two while the skin calms.

Questions

Common questions about laser hair removal

How much does full-body laser hair removal cost?

It depends on which areas you combine. As a guide, single sessions at Embrace Eternal Beauty range from $99 for the lip or chin to $499 for full legs, and six-session packages run from $499 to $2,799 per area. Most people need 6 to 8 sessions, so packages usually offer the best value. You’ll get an exact quote for your combination of areas at your consultation.

How long does laser hair removal last?

Results are long-term. The FDA describes laser hair removal as permanent hair reduction, meaning a stable drop in regrowth after a full course, not removal of every hair. Most people stay much smoother for years. Some hair can return with hormonal changes, aging or certain medications, and it’s usually finer and lighter. An occasional touch-up session keeps results going.

Where should you not get laser hair removal?

Lasers aren’t used close to the eyes, including the eyelids, because of the risk of eye injury. Tattoos, permanent makeup and moles are also avoided, since their pigment absorbs the laser. Skin that is sunburned, broken, infected or freshly tanned should heal first. Dr. Pabona checks every area at your consultation and will tell you if a spot should be skipped.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most people find it very tolerable. Each pulse feels like a quick, warm snap, and the 810 nm diode laser was chosen for comfort and speed. Sensitive areas such as the upper lip, underarms and bikini line can feel a little sharper, but sessions are short. Discomfort usually eases as hair thins over the series, and there’s no downtime afterward.

Should I shave before laser hair removal?

Yes. Shave the treatment area the day before your session so the laser can target the root instead of heating hair on the surface. Don’t wax, pluck or thread between sessions, because those remove the root the laser needs to reach. Arrive with clean skin and no lotion, deodorant or self-tanner on the area. We’ll go over prep at your consultation.

Does laser hair removal work on blond, red or gray hair?

Usually not well. The laser finds hair by its pigment, so dark hair responds best. White, gray, light blond and red hair have little of the pigment the laser targets, so results are often limited. If you have lighter hair, Dr. Pabona will tell you honestly at your consultation whether laser hair removal is worth it for you.

Can I go to a Hot Springs bathhouse after laser hair removal?

Wait at least 24 to 48 hours. Heat from thermal baths, hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms can irritate freshly treated follicles and make redness or bumps worse, and shared hot water raises the risk of folliculitis. Lukewarm showers are fine. Once your skin looks and feels normal again, you can go back to your usual soak on Bathhouse Row.
