How laser spider vein removal works

Laser vein reduction is a non-invasive treatment that uses targeted light energy to heat and collapse unwanted blood vessels beneath the skin. Over the following weeks, your body naturally reabsorbs the treated vessel, leaving clearer, more even-toned skin.

We use the 1064 nm long-pulse Nd:YAG laser on our Spectrum system, a widely used wavelength for vascular treatment. It penetrates deeply and selectively heats the hemoglobin in blood vessels, closing them off while preserving the surrounding skin. It works on red, blue and purple vessels, including:

  • Facial spider veins (telangiectasias)
  • Broken capillaries on the nose, cheeks, chin and under-eye area
  • Cherry angiomas
  • Small clusters of spider veins on the legs

Facial veins vs leg veins: when to see a vein specialist

Spider veins and broken capillaries on the face are small, surface-level vessels, and they respond well to laser. Small clusters of spider veins on the legs can be treated too.

Larger, bulging, rope-like varicose veins are a different problem. They often come from faulty valves in deeper veins and can cause aching, swelling or heaviness, so they need an evaluation by a vein specialist, usually with an ultrasound, rather than surface laser. As an internist, Dr. Pabona will tell you if your veins fall into that group.

Cherry angioma removal

Cherry angiomas are small, bright red spots made of a cluster of tiny blood vessels. They’re benign and very common, especially from middle age on, and often appear on the trunk, arms, scalp and face.

The long-pulse Nd:YAG laser targets the vessel inside the spot, which then fades gradually as your body clears it. One case in our cherry angioma before-and-after gallery was treated in a single session with vascular-specific settings, with after photos taken during early healing. Results vary.

Laser vs sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy treats veins by injecting a solution that irritates the vessel wall so it closes. It’s often the first choice for spider veins on the legs, especially larger ones.

Laser needs no needles and is usually preferred for facial vessels, which are too fine to inject easily, for cherry angiomas and for small leg veins. The two can complement each other. Dr. Pabona will recommend the approach that suits your veins and tell you if another treatment would fit better.

What to expect

Every plan starts with an evaluation by Dr. Pabona, a board-certified internist, at a skin consultation. The 1064 nm YAG laser is one of the safest options for vascular treatment across a wide range of skin types, and sessions are quick, whether you’re in Hot Springs or coming in from Hot Springs Village.

Before

Avoid tanning before treatment, and tell us about blood thinners or other medications that make you bruise easily.

During

Most people feel a light snap or warming sensation with each pulse. Treatments are quick and generally well tolerated, and most clients don’t need numbing.

After

There’s no downtime. Mild redness or swelling along treated vessels is common and usually settles within a few days, and some vessels look darker or slightly bruised before they fade. Protect treated skin from the sun, and avoid heat for a day or two.

Sessions and results

Most clients need 1 to 3 treatments for visible improvement, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart so your body can clear the treated vessels. Treated veins typically collapse and fade for good, but new ones can develop over time, so maintenance treatments may be advised.

Our nose and cheek spider vein before-and-after photos show visible nasal vessels and a fine network across the cheek after long-pulse Nd:YAG treatment. Patient results vary. If your redness is widespread rather than a few distinct veins, an IPL photofacial with its vascular filter may be the better first step.

Questions

Common questions about laser vein removal

Can a laser get rid of spider veins on the face?

Yes. Facial spider veins and broken capillaries respond well to laser. Our 1064 nm long-pulse Nd:YAG laser heats the blood inside each vessel so it closes and is gradually reabsorbed. Most clients see visible improvement within 1 to 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Treated vessels typically don’t return, though new ones can form over time.

How much does it cost to laser spider veins on the face?

At Embrace Eternal Beauty in Hot Springs, simple treatments such as a single spider vein or cherry angioma start at $199 per session. Complex treatments, such as clusters, facial networks or multiple lesions, start at $299 per session. Since 1 to 3 sessions are typical, your total depends on how many vessels you have. You’ll get an exact plan at your consultation.

Which laser is best for facial veins and broken capillaries?

No single device is best for everyone. The 1064 nm long-pulse Nd:YAG reaches deeper and bluish vessels and is one of the safest options across skin tones, which is why it’s used here for spider veins and angiomas. Diffuse redness, as with rosacea, often responds better to intense pulsed light. Dr. Pabona matches the tool to your vessels and skin type.

How safe is laser spider vein removal?

It’s generally very safe when settings are matched to your skin. Common, short-lived effects are redness, swelling and some darkening or bruising of treated vessels. Less common risks include blistering, temporary pigment changes and, rarely, scarring. Protective eyewear is used during treatment. Telling Dr. Pabona about blood thinners, a recent tan or other conditions helps keep it safe.

Will treated spider veins come back?

Treated veins typically collapse and fade for good, but new ones can form over time. Genetics, sun exposure, hormones and rosacea can all lead to new vessels. That’s why maintenance treatments may be recommended based on your skin and lifestyle. Daily sunscreen and avoiding your known redness triggers help your results last longer.

Can I use a hot tub or sauna after laser vein treatment?

Hold off for about 24 to 48 hours. Heat from hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms and the thermal baths widens blood vessels, which can increase swelling and may work against vessels the laser has just closed. Strenuous exercise has a similar effect. Lukewarm showers are fine. After a couple of days, once redness has settled, you can return to your usual routine.
